How cheek fillers work
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule found naturally in the skin. A cross-linked HA filler is firm enough to hold shape, so when it is placed deep on the cheekbone it acts like scaffolding, lifting the soft tissue above it. A small amount in the right place can also take weight off the lower face and reduce the depth of the nasolabial folds.
Your physician injects with a fine needle or a blunt cannula, usually at a few points along the zygomatic arch and the front of the cheek. The aim is balanced, natural proportion rather than large volume. Because HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, the result can be adjusted if needed. For patients with hollowness close to the eyes, the doctor may also discuss under-eye fillers.

- Consultation and mapping Your physician examines your face from several angles, discusses your goals and marks the injection points.
- Numbing A topical anaesthetic cream is applied for about 20 minutes in your private room. Most fillers also contain lidocaine.
- Injection The doctor places the filler in small amounts with a needle or cannula, checking symmetry as they go. This takes around 20–30 minutes.
- Review and aftercare You check the result in the mirror, a cold pack is applied and you receive written aftercare instructions before leaving.

Aftercare
- Use a cold pack gently on the first day
- Avoid pressing or massaging the cheeks unless advised
- Sleep on your back for the first few nights
- Skip saunas, hot yoga and intense exercise for 48 hours
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to limit swelling
- Delay facial massage and dental work for 2 weeks
